3D Cyber Puck    Ticsoft Software,  1995
Rating: 2 1/2 stars  Shareware  [ Screenshot ]
If you've ever dreamed of playing air hockey from the point of view of the paddle, then today is your lucky day! 3D Cyber Puck allows you to do just that in its 3D first person view perspective on the game of air hockey. The primitive 3D graphics do a decent job of displaying the playing field, and there are a variety of different weapons and powerups that you can buy with credits you win. However the game itself is not very deep so replay value will likely be limited.

4D Boxing    Electronic Arts,  1991
Rating: 3 1/2 stars  DEMO!  [ Screenshot ]
4D Boxing attempts to recreate the sport of boxing more accurately than a lot of popular computer or arcade game based on the sport. It uses a graphics system that was, for the time, quite revolutionary; it was "created with TRU-MOTIONtm, an astonishing new technique that uses filled polygons to replicate human motion!" It's more like rock'em sock'em robot motion, but the game was nonetheless revolutionary for its time, and features decent graphics and sound effects, as well as complex controls which give you a lot of variety when maneuvering your fighter. (Note: Run BOX.BAT to start the game.)

Action Supercross    Balazs Rozsa,  1999
Rating: 4 stars  Shareware  [ Screenshot ]
Action Supercross (it's now called "Elasto Mania" in more recent Windows versions) is a motorbike simulation game that lets you drive your motorbike around a bunch of fun levels, bouncing and crashing into stuff. It features nice graphics, realistic physics, and the ability to create your own new content for the game. In fact many people seem to enjoy creating new levels, graphics etc for this game, as evidenced by the many fan sites all around the web! (Note: I could not get this working at all in Windows XP, even with DOSBox or VDMSound. If you have XP, you should download the demo of the new Windows version, "Elasto Mania" instead.)

Basstour    Dick Olsen,  1991
Rating: 3 stars  Shareware  [ Screenshot ]
Looking for a fishing game? This one looks pretty good. Personally I wouldn't enjoy this type of game and didn't really get into it very far, but there seems to be quite a few options, like what kind of rod you use, bait, etc. Not entirely horrible EGA graphics, and PC speaker sounds. Definitely a niche sort of game.

Battle for Atlantis    Soleau Software,  1992
Rating: 3 stars  Shareware  [ Screenshot ]
Battle for Atlantis is a simple war strategy game, which is similar in many ways to the popular Risk board game. Players begin with several countries, each with a different number of armies, and must war against all of the other players in an attempt to take over the board/world. There aren't a lot of special features or options here, but if you are new to this genre of game (or know someone who is) this would probably be a good choice to get them started.

Capture the Flag    Carr Software,  1996
Rating: 4 1/2 stars  Shareware  [ Screenshot ]
This game was given several glowing reviews upon its initial release (1994/95) and its easy to see why. This shareware game has an interface that is very professionally done and rivals the commercial games of its time. The game itself is a clever turn-based strategy game where the object is to capture the other team's flag. Multiplayer play is supported, via hotseat (same computer), modem or PBEM (Play By EMail). The graphics are clean and functional, and overall the game is very well designed.

Catch If You Can    Colin Buckley,  1992
Rating: 4 stars  Shareware  [ Screenshot ]
The game is sort of like a Pong type game mixed in with a baseball type theme. Sounds weird? Well, it is ... but it's fun to play, despite its simple premise. Basically, all you do is catch baseballs. The graphics are very good, the control is excellent, and there's some cool sound effects (including voices) as well. Definitely fun to play ... it feels like an old arcade classic type of game.

Chart Wars    Osiris Games,  2001
Rating: 3 stars  Freeware  [ Screenshot ]
This text-based simulation definitely won't appeal to everyone, but if you've ever had visions of running your own record company, and enjoy simulation games you might want to download this game. You create your own record company, then attempt to sign the right bands (many popular bands are included) to try to earn the most money. It includes lots of stats, numbers, etc but don't expect fancy graphics or sound.

Corncob 3D    MVP Software,  1996
Rating: 3 1/2 stars  Shareware  [ Screenshot ]
Corncob 3D was one of the first and only shareware "3D" flight simulation games available. Its graphics are quite primitive by today's standards, but it does offer quite a variety of different options, and also a couple training missions to help you get adjusted to the game. This game was quite popular back when it was first released. (NOTE: This game probably will run best if you boot into MS-DOS mode first.)

Crime Fighter    Peter Steffen,  1993
Rating: 3 1/2 stars  Freeware  [ Screenshot ]
Crime Fighter shares a couple of things in common with the popular Grand Theft Auto series ... at least in terms of style. Despite the name, you don't do much crime fighting here since you play a recently released criminal on a crime binge. Unlike GTA, this is primarily a strategy game, where you explore the town and commit crimes, interspersed with some puzzles or simple minigames. Overall, it's an interesting game which provides a lot of variety ... just don't try any of this stuff in real life!

EGA Trek    Arcanum Computing,  1994
Rating: 4 stars  Shareware  [ Screenshot ]
EGA Trek is based heavily on very early computer space simulation games. (ie. the first computer game ever, Space War!, aka Computer Space). It includes color graphics that although sparse do the job well. The objective is to eliminate other ships and "save the galaxy". This is a simulation/strategy game with not a lot of action, so it won't be for everyone, but it definitely is a classic PC game.

Electron Havoc    John Shramko,  1993
Rating: 2 1/2 stars  Shareware  [ Screenshot ]
Electron Havoc is a two player strategy game which is similar to the classic Bananas (of QBasic fame) or Scorched Earthy style game. The object is to destroy your opponent by setting your gun location & velocity. The main difference here is that your shots are affected by the gravitational pull of planets in space so you must carefully plan your shots accordingly. The presentation here is quite basic but it does work as intended for those looking for this sort of game.

Elite    Firebird,  1987
Rating: 4 stars  Freeware  [ Screenshot ]
Elite is an open ended space exploration game. There is really no story, you just start off with a spaceship and cruise the galaxy. The game's graphics (at least in this version, there were many others) are rather dated but the game is remarkably large and indepth for its time. More help with this game (including a game manual) can be found at Ian Bell's Elite Pages. (Tip: To start the game, press ESC and the black/purple screen, then press F1 at the menu.)

Epic Baseball    Epic Megagames,  1993
Rating: 4 stars  Shareware  [ Screenshot ]
This "Animated 256-color VGA sports simulation" game from Epic Megagames is a baseball simulation, not an action game. Meaning you don't get to bat, play the outfield, etc. Instead you play the role of manager and try to make the best decisions to help your team win games. Its unfortunate that the game looks so good and the graphics and animations are so smooth, yet you can't actually PLAY baseball! ;) But if you are a fan of the simulation sports genre, definitely check this game out.

Epic Pinball    Epic Megagames,  1995
Rating: 5 stars  Shareware  [ Screenshot ]
My favorite computer pinball games! The shareware version only contains one table, but it's really cool. Great graphics, smooth scrolling, SB sounds, and "good enough" physics. It's really fun to play, and remember that a computer pinball game can do stuff you never could with a physical table. Ordering the whole collection from Epic would be worth it. I did! (Note: The screenshot shows the entire table ... however, only about 2/3 of the table is viewable at a time during gameplay ... the view scrolls with the ball.)

Executive Suite    Armonk Corporation,  1982
Rating: 3 stars  Freeware  [ Screenshot ]
Executive Suite is a simplistic text game that aims to simulate a business career. The game uses simple text-based "graphics" and a series of multiple choice questions to portray your career in one of several possible occupations. Your decisions affect your chances of receiving a promotion. The game is easy to play and fun for awhile, although the replayability of the game will probably not be high despite the different possible jobs.

Fire Fighter    Eben Sprinsock,  1998
Rating: 2 1/2 stars  Shareware  [ Screenshot ]
Fire Fighter is an interesting ASCII-based strategy game which is not nearly as long and drawn-out as most strategy games. An entire game/scenario can last only a minute or two. The idea is to use three different methods (water, fire breaks, and backfires) to control the spread of fires and save homes on a randomly generated map. It's a neat idea and plays well enough but honestly there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of careful strategy required to be successful.

Football Fanatic    ThunderBear,  1996
Rating: 3 stars  Freeware  [ Screenshot ]
Quite different from modern football games, Football Fanatic is a sports management simulation game. That means it's all text (no graphics) and you don't actually play football, you manage the team's decisions, like financing, sponsorships, scouting, etc. This game won't be fun for a lot of people but there is still a niche market for games like this, so if you enjoy text-based sports sim games try this one out.

Fuzzy's World of Miniature Space Golf    Pixel Painters,  1995
Rating: 4 1/2 stars  Shareware  [ Screenshot ]
I vividly remember playing this one years ago. This miniature golf game is quite fun to play, and its obvious that a lot of time and effort was poured into the game's presentation and overall look. Great graphics and sound effects compliment the simple yet entertaining gameplay. Definitely a keeper even though the shareware version is limited, and of course the game's author, Pixel Painters, is long gone and so is hope of getting the full version. :(

Isle Wars    Soleau Software,  1994
Rating: 3 1/2 stars  Shareware  [ Screenshot ]
In this strategy style game your goal is to take over the world! It's similar to the classic game Risk, but adds some new elements like natural disasters. There's quite a lot of thinking and planning required to be sucessful. Plus you can play against computer opponents ... luckily you can adjust the difficulty level! It may not have the greatest graphics or sound effects but it's definitely enjoyable if you like this sort of game.

Lawn Mower    Chrisopher D. Orr,  1987
Rating: 2 1/2 stars  Freeware  [ Screenshot ]
At its heart Lawn Mower is a maze or Pac-Man like game. Although I had seen some recent shareware Windows games with a similar theme, I was surprised to find this ASCII DOS game from 1987. The object is to mow the text-mode lawn as efficiently as possible by avoiding obstacles, using as little gas as possible, etc. It looks decent enough and plays reasonably well, but there isn't a whole lot of depth. (Note: You must use the numeric keypad to move.)

Lemmings at War    E. Wenners,  2001
Rating: 3 stars  Freeware  [ Screenshot ]
Lemmings at War is a twist on the classic Lemmings game. Actually the gameplay is more similar to that of Scorched Earth or the WORMS series than Lemmings. Basically here the Lemmings have had enough and are fighting it out. Much like Scorched Earth the lemmings battle by choosing the angle and power of their shots, as well as their weapons. You can also move your characters around before you fire, and jump. (Note: This is NOT the Lemmings puzzle game! See Puzzle Games Page 3 for the classic Lemmings game!)

LHX Attack Chopper    Electronic Arts,  1990
Rating: 3 1/2 stars  DEMO!  [ Screenshot ]
LHX Attack Chopper was a game some of my grade-school chums were heavily into back in the day. (Gee, I feel old ...) This demo gives you a taste of what the original provided. The graphics look extremely dated by today's standards, and the game has a steep learning curve (make sure to read LHXDEMO.TXT for the game's controls) but was an important game for its time, even though it apparently isn't a particularly accurate simulation of the LHX helicopter.

MinerVGA    Harrell W. Stiles,  1989
Rating: 3 1/2 stars  Public Domain  [ Screenshot ]
Miner is part strategy, part maze exploration, and part simulation. The object is to mine as much precious metals out of the ground so you can sell them to get as much money as possible. The graphics and sounds are mostly nonexistent but there is a surprising amount of strategy involved in this quite old game.

Mortar    Pelle Coltau & Jens Juul Jacobsen,  2001
Rating: 4 stars  Freeware  [ Screenshot unavailable ]
Mortar is a copycat game, but a pretty good one. In Mortar the object is to destroy your opponent's tanks by setting the angle and velocity of your shots. Gameplay is livened up a bit by the inclusion of various weapons that you can buy. The main quibble with this game is the lack of computer opponents; you can only play against other human players. Other that that it has good graphics, but Scorched Earth (below) is still probably better in most aspects.

Need for Speed (The)    Electronic Arts,  1995
Rating: 3 1/2 stars  DEMO!  [ Screenshot ]
The first game in the now venerable Need for Speed series made an appearance for DOS computers, in addition to the Playstation and other console platforms. This demo version of the game shows off its impressive 3D graphics (not assisted by special hardware) and sound effects ... impressive for 1995, anyways. It doesn't offer you any options but does allow you to race against computer controlled cars and get a feel for what the game is like. It does offer some simple but enjoyable racing action and serves as a prototype for future games in the series.

NHL Hockey    EA Sports,  1993
Rating: 4 stars  DEMO!  [ Screenshot ]
This demo of the first PC version of EA's still continuing hockey series removes all options and lets you play a brief 2-minute game with a random selection of two of the 26 teams. (Back then there were "only" 26!) It features well drawn but slightly choppy graphics, and was the template upon which all future 2D EA Sports hockey games were built upon. Its simple 2-button controls and gameplay can actually be quite refreshing compared to modern hockey games.

Pinball Fantasies    21st Century Entertainment,  1994

Pinball Fantasies is one of several PC pinball games which feature detailed graphics, good music and realistic physics. This demo version of the full game allows you to play for 10 minutes before the game shuts down. Poko Memorial Miniature Golf    Anonymous,  1987

Poko Memorial Miniature Golf is a simple mini golf game. The graphics are quite simple and so is the gameplay. First aim your shot (using the , and . keys) then press a number from 1-9 to hit your shot (1 being weakest, 9 being strongest). That's it. Could be fun as a brief diversion, and once you figure out how to beat each hole you can get perfect scores each time, since there's no manual dexterity required! :)

RACE!    Carl Erikson,  1989
Rating: 2 1/2 stars  Shareware  [ Screenshot ]
Race! is a simple racing game in the style of the Super Sprint games. The goal is to race around the various tracks against your opponents. After each race you can upgrade your tiny car. There is also a built-in track editor to make your own tracks. The game is quite simplistic, and the car seems somewhat difficult to control. Some of the features are ahead of its time (upgrades, track editor) but the extremely plain graphics hurt this game's replayability. (Note: Run EGARACE.EXE for EGA graphics, or RACE.EXE for plainer CGA graphics.)

Red Baron    Sierra On-Line Inc,  1991
Rating: 5 stars  Commercial (No longer free)  [ Screenshot ]
Computer Gaming World magazine, in 1996, chose Red Baron as the 4th best computer game ever made! (Not to get your expectations high or anything!) Red Baron is a flight simulator that allows you to dogfight against many different WWI advisaries, including the Red Baron. You can choose from 28 different planes, plus there are lots of other options. If you can overlook the somewhat dated graphics and sounds, you might like it! As below, now offers patched versions of three classic RB products that work perfectly in Windows!)

Scorched Earth    Wendell Hicken,  1995
Rating: 4 1/2 stars  Shareware  [ Screenshot ]
The best tank war game I've ever seen. It's called 'The Mother of all games' by the author. In it, you are competing against up to 10 other tanks (controlled by other players or by the computer) and you battle by entering a velocity and turrent angle and firing off various weapons, which you can purchase between rounds. It looks and plays great, and it's great fun blowing up a tiny little tank with a huge nuke.

Ski Jump International v3    Ville K?n?nen,  1995
Rating: 3 stars  Shareware  [ Screenshot ]
This game simulates the ski jump event, an olympic event which I was personally never much interested in, but this athletic competition has been transformed into a realistic game of reflexes and timing. The object is simply to jump as far as possible, over some nicely drawn winter landscapes. The keyboard keys used for the jumping process are rather complicated, so make sure to read the instructions before playing.

Solar Hockey League    Harm Hanemaayer and John Remyn,  1992
Rating: 3 stars  Shareware  [ Screenshot ]
A better name for this game might be "advanced air hockey". The game plays kind of like air hockey (with 3 paddles per side) and kind of like regular hockey. The object is to score on your opponent's goal. The game's graphics and sound are minimal, but you can play both a two player game and a game against a tough computer opponent. Tiny file size too! :)

Stellar Conquest III is a strategy game which involves decent EGA graphics (suitable to the genre) and seems quite involved, with lots to do and lots to learn. Super Speed Christmas Edition    Tom Fresen,  1995
Rating: 3 stars  Shareware  [ Screenshot ]
A car racing game similar to the older game Super Sprint. This version has received a Chistmas-themed makeover ... however, the effect on the actual game is very small. You race your little red car around the track, picking up items and powerups, while trying not to crash. It can be fun, but it's tricky to get the hang of at first. Average VGA graphics and sound effects. (Note: I had some problems with the keyboard settings ... it wouldn't let me use some keys.)

Super Worms    Wiering Software,  2001
Rating: 4 stars  Shareware  [ Screenshot ]
First of all, this game has nothing to do with the classic WORMS games by Team17/Microprose. It is actually quite similar to the classic SNES game "Super Mario Kart". In this game you race your worm around a racing track (okay, sure, makes sense to me) against other worms. On the way you can pickup powerup items (ala Mario Kart) to use against the other racers. It's a very well polished, professional game, however the shareware version contains only the first five tracks out of the total of 20 tracks in the full version.

Teed-Off    Kevin Hendricks,  1986
Rating: 2 1/2 stars  Freeware  [ Screenshot ]
Teed-Off is a simple golf game. The object, not surprisingly, is to get your ball into the hole. Much like many modern golf games, you choose your club, angle, then hit the spacebar to time your shot. Although the graphics are quite poor compared to modern golf games (CGA 4-color graphics here, mostly circles and boxes) it does show that the basic game mechanics didn't evolve much over the next few years, besides improvements in the presentation of the games.

Theme Park    Bullfrog Productions,  1994
Rating: 4 stars  DEMO!  [ Screenshot ]
Theme Park is a classic strategy game, and one of the earliest "tycoon"-style games. In this demo version, your ride selection is limited to just one ride type, and there are many other limits as well. However it does give you a sample of the full game: Good graphics (for its time!) and decent sound/music too. The game is a little unbalanced at times, but anyone who's played this will definitely remember it! (The "Boooo! Boooo!" sound effect is what I mostly remember ...) Three Point Basketball    MVP Software,  1992

If you've played any Flash-based sports games, you pretty much know what to expect from Three Point Basketball. The object is to simply shoot baskets, by timing your mouse clicks. There are a couple options to set, such as tournament or practice modes, and whether the basket moves or not. The graphics/sounds are not great, but some may find this simple game a relaxing diversion along the lines of a simple web-based Flash game.

Triplane Turmoil    Dodekaedron Software Creations,  1998
Rating: 4 stars  Freeware  [ Screenshot ]
Seemingly this game attempts to build upon the play mechanics of the classic flying game Sopwith. It certainly features great graphics and sounds, and a good variety of missions. The object is to complete missions by flying/bombing/shooting in your triplane. Make sure to read the enclosed documentation before trying to play or you will be lost! Also I experienced some problems when I tried to change the control settings, make sure you change them in the PLAYER ROSTER area, not the CONTROLS area.

Seems like a rip-off of Super Mario Kart ... but it plays fairly well. It's a racing game where you choose a character and race go-karts around a track. Fairly good (but not very smooth) VGA graphics and sound effects. It can be fun, but Mario Kart is still better.

Warcraft: Orcs & Humans    Blizzard Entertainment,  1994

This DEMO version of the full game gives you a taste of what the original entry into the Warcraft series of games was like. "Orcs & Humans" (or simply Warcraft I) came before Warcraft II and Warcraft 3 and while it has its merits, it is generally surpassed by Warcraft II in most ways. Still this game will still be fun for fans of the genre, and those interested in the origins of their latest addiction. (Seriously, although I don't personally play it Warcraft 3 seems to be the most addictive game I've seen in years, judging from friends of mine that play.)

This demo version of the popular Worms game allows you to get a taste of what the full game is like. Patterned after older classics like Scorched Earth and, yes, Gorilla, Worms allows you to control various militaristic worms which are trying to kill each other. YAB Baseball    Tom Fresen,  1992
Rating: 3 stars  Full version  [ Screenshot ]
YAB Baseball (what does YAB stand for?) is a fairly average baseball game, with a couple of features and quirks that make it interesting. First, its graphics are charming (though its sounds are mostly annoying). Second, the individual photos used for each batter make me wonder if the author rounded up his friends and/or coworkers and forced them to have their picture taken to be digitized into the game. Finally, the control scheme is a bit unique/complicated. If you want a DOS-based baseball game, your options are rather limited, so give it a shot ...

Z    Renegade Software,  1996
Rating: 4 1/2 stars  DEMO!  [ Screenshot ]
Possibly one of the worst named games ever (well, definitely the shortest name, anyways) Z is a real-time strategy game (RTS) which was quite popular when it was originally released and it still has fans today.
