688 Attack Sub is a submarine simulation game, taking place during the cold war era. The player can perform various missions and can choose to control American or Soviet submarines. The focus here is on "realism" rather than action, and you'll need to learn the various different systems of the submarine in order to make progress. This demo version apparently came as some sort of bonus on Maxell diskettes, since there are constant references to Maxell during the game. (It even notes during the tutorial that certain features were omitted in this demo since they wouldn't it on the single floppy disk!) The demo does include a tutorial of sorts, although it doesn't explain how to play, just what the various options within the subsystems do. This is not my kind of game so I didn't invest too much time into trying to figure out what everything does. The graphics are decent for the time and it offers mouse control, and the full version offered multiplayer over modem, which I think was pretty good for the time period. I do remember that during grade school in the early 90's several of my friends were obsessed with this game so if you're into simulation war games give it a try.
