Set the Hostages Free is an interesting game concept, created in 1981 (!) using color ASCII text-mode "graphics". Your gun/pointer/thingie rotates around the game board, as do the enemies. In order to rescue the hostages (aka, ASCII character 1 & 2's in the center) you must shoot to the "bandits" moving around the center area in a limited number of shots. It feels sorta like several other games (ex, Tempest, Qix, or maybe Warlords?) but no other game I know uses this exact gameplay. There are three difficultly levels, but generally the game seems quite difficult. You're playing more for a high score than to win!
