Chess88 is one of the oldest chess games available for IBM compatible PCs. (The '88' presumably refers to the 8088 CPU not the year it was released.) It's you versus the PC, and your options are whether you want to play as white or black, and how many levels of look-ahead you want. (Higher = tougher CPU opponent.) I am not a great chess player so I can't comment on how good the PC strategies are, but if you just want a no-frills chess game (or remember playing this on your XT back in the day) this may be a good choice.
