Castle of the Winds is from the roguelike genre. You could try ADOM or Nethack or Omega to start with.

If you're looking for *good* games that are as simple as COTW I'd try the first couple of Wizardry games... they're simple enough to have a low learning curve and keyset. (Unlike ADOM which takes months to get to a point where you can win) Along that line would be Moraff's world-though you'll have to buy it and the other 2 moraff RPGs aren't nearly as in-depth.

For a Dungeon Crawl that is simple environment-wise but incredible as far as story and graphics go-try Anvil of Dawn. Reverse the order and get Zangband.

If you like really, really, really, really, really fucking long games try a few from the Avernum series, we're talking 400+ hours with incredibly huge wildernesses full of secret areas. A bit overwhelming at times though.

However i should mention that COTW has a sequel. ITs pretty much the same as number 1 but a different mission

It is now legal for download

I mean with the same graphics and pretty much same game play as COtW. Birds eye view and everything. I already know about Ragnarok. That is the type of game I am looking for.

COTW 2 is just the full version of the original-nothing special.
