DOS Games Discussion

What's your opinion? what are the most influential, technically advanced, highly rated etc games in human history. i'm referring specifically to Dos/Windows. My list would be:

Best adventure - myst series, Tomb Raider series
Best RPG - Diablo I, Daggerfall, Diablo II, Ultima, Baldur's Gate
Best RTS - Warcraft II, C&C, Age of Empires II
Best Flight Sim - Longbow 2, Falcon 4.0, Flight Simulator series
Best turn-based - Heroes III
Best Action - Doom, Duke Nukem 3D, Quake, Unreal, Half-Life
Best tactical shooter - Rainbow Six, Thief The Dark Project

i also thought of listing some bad games as well. but they're harder to remember. if anything because nobody bothers remembering them. i would add in no particular order

Jurassic Park Trespasser, Ultima 9... and that's all i can name

I'll keep it short:
Doom - U8 Pagan - Falcon 3 - Longbow 2 - Unreal/UT99 - Half life (only the first one!) - Fallout - Quake 2 - Deus ex- Corncob 3D (meh, yeah I know, I know ....) - ......
and so many others I enjoyed ...... so many .... so many......

University, first job, engagement, marriage, cancer... great important 90's.

Interplay Lord of the Rings, Planet's edge, Wing Commander, Arena, Daggerfall, Quake, Ultima Underworld, Planescape: Torment - the 90s were a awesome timeframe!

But Breach, Pac Man, Ultima IV, Kroz, Paratrooper, Snipes, Snarf, Shogun, Popcorn, Tetris, Manhunter: New York, King's Quest, Space Quest, Codename Iceman, Trek, and Rogue from the 80's - that's my heart's true love! Well, I guess, 85 to 95 to pick a 10 year span.

Dunno about the "most influential" part, but "technically advanced" and "highly rated" are parameters that can be measured and compared on an objective basis. It shouldn't be too hard to track down games with highest system requirements (for the year of release) that got most praise from major game review sources.

Puzzle: The Incredible Machine, Supaplex
FPS: Wolfenstein 3D, Blood, Duke 3D, Descent, ROTT
Simulation: Theme Park, Theme Hospital

Plenty more too.

Whats wrong with cosmo? Sure it has shitty PC speaker music.. but its alright. Duke 1, Lemmings are also fun

I didn't say there is something wrong with Cosmo, just that, dunno, favorite game seems a bit fart stretched, that's all.

I'm pretty sure it supported Adlib/SB16. Sorry your 90's computer sucked haha. Its graphics were also pretty bright and inviting.

and the list goes on and on...

My fave of the 90s:

1. Half Life
2. Doom
3. Diablo
4. System Shock 2
5. Mortal Kombat 3

Somehow it looks like y'all are forgetting that they were still making platformers in the mid-to-late nineties, with classics like Rayman (1 and 2, which was 3D), Oddworld (Oddysee&Exoddus) and Abuse (that I personally did not care for, but was interesting in many ways).

Of the early-90s Apogee/id platformers, I think Duke II is easily the best, with the second Keen trilogy and Bio Menace somewhat behind. Earthworm Jim 1&2 are also great. And of course, Prince of Persia 1&2. PoP3D failed to deliver, and it wasn't until Sands of Time in the 2000s that the series was properly translated into 3D.

In terms of turn-based strategy, I actually like Heroes II better than III, even though from technical aspects the latter is superior in every way.

And the Mortal Kombat series is my favorite fighting franchise, specifically MK2.

I'm going to sound like a Blizzard fanboy, but I was hooked on gaming because of their 90's games. I loved Diablo, Starcraft and Warcraft games. I'd throw in the Heroes of Might and Magic 2 & 3 on that list too.

Very tempting to bookmark this thread and play games from it every weekend!

I loved Solitaire, Minesweeper and the various entertainment packs for Windows. Especially while listening to MIDI tunes in the background. I still play some of the games: Chess, Word Zap and Klotski (block-moving game).

The first two Civ games came out in the 90's. Great to see the franchise is still going to this day.

Lastly, would definitely recommend the various point & click adventures from Sierra and Lucas Arts. Sam & Max was my go-to game in my college days, on my good old 386/40 and Sound Blaster 2.0.
