Old Magic Oriented Game

So here's what I remember, and most of this is really fuzzy so there might be nuances in details. I'm pretty sure the game started with your mentor dying in his home, and he tasked you with something. I think you're a wizard (with a purple hood) that moves horizontally, and up and down. The screen is 2d and moves with you as you progress through the levels. Every so often you come across save markers where you can save your game. In the later levels you get to a desert area, you can obtain a flying carpet, and it becomes a lot more complex. Even more, in the later levels there are lava zones where you have to run away from an encroaching fire wall, either from the side or from the top/bottom. Please please help, it's been bugging me for a while now. Thanks!
