Then install the trial version of everest and find out what hardware you have.
http://www.lavalys.com/products/downloa ... UE&lang=en
You will need to know what it is, really.

BTW, you said it was 'outputting', how you know that fact?

Did you try directly on your motherboards socket? The right one? On the back of your PC? The front ones usually have a cable, can be that one is disconnected when you moved your HD......

And please don't plug it in your mic socket

That's where you must look in Vista (classic setting).
But check first where you plugged your speakers in, and certainly try the socket on the back, that one is directly on the motherboard.

It's in the right socket.

Config test told me output was outputting... I believed it.

Sound device is microsoft? Does that help any?
I'll download that thingy in a minute.

Hmm.
Today when i turned my computer on it came up with that little, "installing device drivers" thingy for the audio-ness.
Then it was all, "yep, good to go." but still does not work.
:(

Ah you poor thing.
Here, a catpic:Image

Still have no idea about your hardware ......

Do you really know none in your surroundings that knows a bit of those things? It's probably a minor thingy.

Oh ....... that can give troubles on Vista, it was originally a 'XP only' device.
That's the latest Vista driver (that I know of ...) for that thing:
http://www.bioticaindia.com/via-vt8237a ... oller.html
You need to register ( :/ ) to be able to download.

But alas, it's not a certified driver, ASUS seems not to be able to provide a 100% Vista compatible driver.

Another solution is:
Download and save this:
1 -> ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp32501-33000/sp32646.exe
2 -> http://www.viaarena.com/Driver/HDA_V500b.zip

First step: try to install '2' directly, with a bit of luck you're settled.

Otherwise:
Uninstall all that you find in your device manager with 'audio' in, install '1' and above it '2', those are XP modified drivers, but they should work on any Vista.

And before Wally jumps in and says Vista is crap, it's not Vista's fault, it's the manufacturer that doesn't supply a Vista driver for older hardware, they prefer sell new hardware.

Are you kidding or what? XP barely runs on the newest multicore-CPUs/chipsets.
:blah:

Simple fact Wally: buy new up-to-date hardware and Vista runs perfect on it.
Alas the Vista drivers aren't always suited for older hardware.

Same goes for Mac, you won't run an older MacOS on the newest Macs, and you will get into trouble running the latest MacOS on an old Mac.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAhahahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrgghhhh....
He calls a 3 years young Mac an OLDER Mac.
OLDER he says.
Older..... says much about Macs.
LMAO.
FYI: Vista runs on a P1. Now yeah, 'runs'... crawls.
Try it the other way around Wally.
Old MacOS on a todays one.
And by old please don't talk about 3 years you Macnut.

Who's the 'We'?
What you tried with what driver?
You want me to guess?
Details lady, details .....

To cheer you up: it's possible you gonna need to reinstall Vista from scratch and use appropiate drivers whilst installing, or do you know how to edit the registry?

The "we" is the second link thingy you gave me.
It went through the whole instally process then said, "We can't find HD Audio device".
So i followed your instructions and uninstalled, then used the first link thingy...
It asked me to restart the computer, so i did.
Then i used the second one again.
And it said, "We can't find HD Audio device" again.

I don't like my chances at editting the registry.
Too much that i could accidentally destroy.
Then again, there's nothing on the computer and i now own a legal copy of vista...
So i could always re-install it again if i fuck everything up, no?

Gamer, try this device driver Device Driver. It's the closest to your AD version, it is vista driver meaning it only works on Vista, if you have problems get back to me...
