Some games run too fast in DOSBox

Post by Rabit »

Hi,
These two games work too fast in DOSBox. I am using DOSBox 0.74 with D-Fend 1.3.5 in Windows 7 64 bit
- Clone Invader - http://www.dosgamesarchive.com/download/clone-invader/
- Stargunner - http://www.dosgamesarchive.com/download/stargunner/ - the shareware version. The full version is for Windows anyways.

I can't play them at all.

If you have the same issue with other games maybe it's a good idea to report them in this thread too.

Possible solutions:
Lower cycles
Lower memory
Use another core ( Possible values: auto, 386, 386_slow, 486_slow, pentium_slow, 386_prefetch )

FYI: on my PC I need to lower cycles to some 750 to get a normal clone invaders gameplay.

Etcetera etcetera ..................
And somewhere in DFend you can create a profile specific for said games. (Where exactly? No idea, ask on DFend support forum, but I know it can be done).
Or ditch DFend and run the games directly in dosbox with their own specific dosbox config file (dosbox -> manual)

No.
If you have problems with a game start a new topic.
Don't mix 20 game problems in one topic, none is helped with that kind of topics.
Isn't helpful with the search function.

Ditto dosraider. Playing stuff from XT days I often start at 500 cycles and crank it up or down a little from there - I had to get one game into the 350 range to be happy - not sure if I'm just slower or the game was crazy!

Usually you can use CTRL-F11 to slow games down, but sometimes it takes a while, since it may start in the 3000 range!

(Yes, it also matters which core you use - hopefully that's easy to select in dfend.)

Hmm, I remember Stargunner shareware worked fine for me with DOSBox set to max cycles and 32 MiB RAM (with everything else at default settings), except I had to run it with some parameter that fixes VESA support (you can look it up the the supplied help file).

Also, make sure you're running the latest version (you can get it here at 3D Realms), as the DOS Games Archive sometimes doesn't offer the latest version of some games (no idea about Stargunner though).
