dos boot problem

Post by oldfart »

I recently found my old DOS copy of 7th Guest(1993?). It requires booting in DOS, freeing up below 640 to run. Can anyone help as I lost all my old disks/as well as my marbles a few years ago! Any autoexec/congig/etc help would be sincerely appreciated. Thanks

Do you have Windows 95 or 98 or 98SE installed?

The particulars of autoexec.bat and config.sys files tend to be specific to the system they are running on. However generally the config.sys should begin -

DOS=HIGH,UMB
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS I=B000-B7FF

if you require Extended Memory (XMS) for the game. If it needs Expanded Memory (EMS) then you'd substitute "RAM" for "NOEMS" in the third line.

For most games you will also need to load mouse and sound drivers. CuteMouse (use 1.9 for this), which is linked in my sig, is a good one. You just put it in your autoexec.bat and it'll load itself high (i.e. C:\ whatever the path is\CTMOUSE.EXE). The line(s) for your sound card depend upon what card you have installed.

Do you need CD-ROM support too?

E-mail me with your system configuration (look at my signature below, and send me one just like it), and I'll write you an AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS, and instructions on how to set it up.

The 7th Guest is a kickass game. Ironically, I just found/installed/played/beat The 7th Guest this weekend.
