Looking for a 2D game with man crouching with down arrow!

Hi All! I’m looking for an old game I used to play.

Platform: I’m 33. We had a Commodore 64 when I was 6-7. We got a PC when I was 8-9 which was DOS based. Few years later we had a Windows machine. I have no idea which platform this game was on. Most probably it was not on Windows.

Game description:
- 2D. Extremely basic.
- I remember the colors were cold, maybe blue and gray.
- structured map between the screens. I remember my father had put together the map for one of the episodes of the game to show how to get from one screen to another.
- character: the player was a guy who could crouch with the down arrow to hide from the enemy. The crouching had a funny sound. Then with the up arrow he could get back to stand, with another funny sound! Almost the opposite of the crouching sound.
- enemies: I remember two of them. 1. A ghoul which used to come up from the ground as you walked in the screen where the ghoul was! The player would die when he was in contact with the ghoul. There was no shooting or anything like that. You had to collect stuff from the other screens to make the ghoul disappear. That’s where the map came in handy! 2. A beggar: all the beggar did was to block your way! Again, you had to collect bags of money from other screens to give to the beggar to pass! The game was too basic and too smart!
- other things I remember:
goal was to go from one point to another, similar to games where there’s a start door and an end door. I don’t remember any doors though.
I don’t remember any kind of shootings! But then I don’t know the purpose of the down arrow and what we were trying to protect ourselves from!
I remember one possible ending of the game was to get stuck in a world with no escape.

I’d really appreciate if anyone shares their thoughts on this! I’ve been trying to find this for over a year! Thank you!

Umm...is the player character simply crouching, or is he really shrinking to a miniature?

Just crouching. I used a bad verb. Plus, what I remember is a tiny character. So, don’t imagine a neat crouching, just a small figure going down and turning into a circle.

Rwolf, thanks, I changed my choice of verb in the description ;)

Some random guessing of C64 games:

Black Crystal (top-down, has alternating outside maps and indoor areas)

Spirit of the Stones (sideview, platform type, also alternating external map & indoor scenes)

Thanks a lot! Unfortunately it’s none of theses. I might be wrong but I guess the quality was more advanced compared to these two.
Is there a name for this type of games where you need to go back and forth between the screens to achieve your goal? E.g. in Prince of Persia.
Thanks again!

Some of the older adventure games used crouching to hide, possibly one of Sierras King Quest games or similar would fit with no fighting; some were available on multiple platforms, like C64 and PC. Exactly which one could be hard to pinpoint.

Rwolf, Your knowledge of games is impressive! I just watched some walkthroughs of Kong’s Quest. I’d say quality wise it looked similar to the one in 1984 or maybe just a bit more advanced. The game I’m looking for had no notion of moving from up to bottom in the Y axis, only left to right in the X axis. There may have been some jumping, falling or ladder climbing, I don’t know. But walking in the Y axis was not an option.
About crouching: it was unrealistic. Imagine the character turning into a round bag or something.

There is a long list to look at here: https://www.mobygames.com/browse/games/ ... adventure/
