Bobot or drone Battle Arena game from 90's [The Machines]

Post by dranoweb »

I attempted this post in September last year and after fighting with the word filter for nearly a month I simply gave up - the frustration was simply too much for the sake of a game, but now I'm back as the memory of this game just won't die and it's bugging me badly.

so here goes:

I used to play a battle-bot style game post in approx 2002.

The game would have originated about 1994 - ish.

It revolved around constructing and battling remote control robots (not cyborgs)
There was a career mode with all the usual bits that come with it.

There was part of the game with great artwork that depicted a futuristic street scene, a bit like chinatown where you could select different vendors, Including a couple of black market sellers.

The menu was a static image of a china-town-like street - and one had to visually locate the storefronts from within the image.

Particular upgrades became available as one progressed up the ladder.
I also seem to remember that there were some different tournaments etc as well, but my memory is fuzzy on that part.

I have concluded that this was an obscure dev - as was my taste in the day.

Games that this is not:
OMF 2097
Battletech
Battle Team 1
Battle Team 2
Battlerace
Battlesport
Robosport
Robot Oddyssey
Robotron 2084
War Robots
War inc (though this looks pretty cool)

Rise of the Robots series? OMF series would have been first guess.

You know about mobygames.com and searching lists there? Just making sure.

No, not OMF2097 or rise of the robots.

Not humanoid

This was more along the lines of battlebots, but considerably earlier.

Bobot or drone Battle Arena game from 90's

Ok so after literally years of searching, and fighting with this forum's word filters, I finally worked it out:

"The Machines"
A horribly creative name if I ever saw one.

I found a website that details it - this is the link:

Good that you found it, and thanks for the update; there is also a Mobygames page (with the Amiga name 'Universal Warrior' as primary)

Yes I had just come back to post that it was apparently a dos port of universal warrior.

That explains the crazy key assignments.
I happen to have an amiga 2000 with all the upgrades siting in my shed.
I might fire it up again before parting with it.
