DOS games IRC is back!

Post by The_Sinister_Mastermind »

OK some of you might have used the old IRC channel, it was on Slashnet for a little while, then Freenode, but it was well and truly dead, didn't seem like any of the channels were properly registered either.

Regardless, we have a new officially registered channel, I don't have a bot in there right now to voice, hop, op, etc. But I'm getting a ChanServ bot made for the channel so it won't be long.

Anyway, the all important information:
Server: irc.p2p-network.net
Channel: #DOSgames
For mIRC users: irc://irc.p2p-network.net/DOSgames

For everyone else, I recommend using KVIrc, it's open source, clean simple interface. If you need help setting up KVIrc or mIRC send me a PM or catch me on MSN.

Obviously since the channel has just been created it’s rather empty right now, so I’d encourage you that if possible, leave your client open and idle in there, having more users in there makes the channel more attractive and that means more users which means more talk which makes for more fun, enjoy, hope to see you all there soon.

Oh I forgot to mention, listen port range is 6666-6669 on standard clients, 6697 & 7000 for SSL enable clients. If you don't know what an SSL enabled client is, yours isn't. :D

The networks official help channel is #help or you can always query me (Type /q The_Sinister_Mastermind), the whois command won't work on me so don't bother trying to find me that way. :P

Well if people are struggling let me know, I'll post up a how-to guide for mIRC, KVIrc and registering your nick.

Quick How-to access our IRC channel using KVIrc:

Install the KVIrc client, it is suggested because it's open-source software, available to everyone for free

After installing, click the shortcut on your desktop, on it's first run, you'll be asked for your desired nick. (It's a good idea to use the same nick as your username here.)

When you're done,
1. Select Settings -> Configure KVirc.
2. Expand Connection, select Servers.
3. In the Server textbox type "irc.p2p-network.net"
4. In the Port textbox type "6667"

Image

5.Click on Advanced
6. Enter your nickname and username

Image

7.Select Join Channels, type #DOSgames in the textbox and click Add. *

Image

Now save changes (by clicking ok), and restart KVIrc, you should be auto-joining #DOSgames channel everytime you run KVIrc

* NOTE: In the screenshot it says #kindmetal, this is where you type #DOSgames. I didn’t take a new screenshot to change this as the version used in this example is 3.2.0 which is the current stable release, the one you should be getting.

I use a more recent release which looks quite a bit different; however it not being stable, I recommend you stick with the older stable version. If you need to read this guide in order to get IRC working, then you shouldn’t be using an experimental unstable version of the software now should you? :P

Just a reminder that the DOSgames IRC is still there, please drop by sometime and by all means feel free to leave your client open and idle.

The more people in there the more likely others will join and then comes the enthralling conversation.[/sarcasm]

Oh yeah, if you need to get my attention, type my name, or type TSM, I’ll get a nick alert and if I’m at my PC I’ll come to see what the bloody hell is going on. :P

Also, on a side note, it would be great if some of the other mods/admins could add links to the IRC in their sigs (And log on!) as it would be another useful avenue to quickly assist people having gaming troubles.

Hang around next time. :P And we need to get a way for other DOS gamers to swing by more often. The term has ended and I haven't found a new job so I've been spending a lot of time on IRC in between spouts of gaming.

Oh yeah, just on a side note, I never got a ChanServ bot especially made, well, I tried but Loki never got back to me so I just got Slave in there instead. Any regular members here who plan on being a regular there I recommend registering your nick and I'll add you to the access list.

No problem with that , aslong it's revelant.
Even think that the IRC topic should be a sticky .......... maybe.

And for Trillian: never used that, so you will need someone else to help you out with that.

Well, I don't think this should be a sticky, since the IRC channel IS featured on the DOS Games Network header.

But regarding Trillian, my guess is[never actually used it] that it should work on multiple servers.

If not there are plenty of IRC software, such as KVIrc(for a how-the-hell-do-I-use-this-crap-? tutorial see the above mentioned link in the header), or, if you're willing to go the extra notch, and incorporate IRC in your Firefox(not advisable on older comps, slows the hell out of launching Firefox) you could use ChatZilla

2. theres no where to use more then one server
3. i dont use firfox, nor do I know how too.

FireFox is just as easy to use as Internet Explorer, I'd recommend using FF over IE. Then download ChatZilla.

I used to use Trillian as an IM client before I switched to Pidgen, but never used it for IRC...

x-chat is the best IRC client I know of. It's free and open source. I use it in Linux, and have just started using it in wintrash. It's far metter than mIRC.

And yeah, I agree with Pancake. Scrap IE. Firefox is the way to surf.

Having never used the chatzilla plugin, I'm not sure if it has the ability to connect to multiple servers simultaneously. I know you can do that with x-chat, though.
