Important please read: Moving to dedicated server

Post by emmzee »

Hi all,

dosgames.com will be moving to its own dedicated server within the next week or so. This has several advantages:

1) Speed. Rather than sharing a box with a hundred other users, dosgames.com will be running on its very own RAQ4. (Well, shared with my other piddly little sites that generate about 1% of the traffic that dosgames.com does.)

2) Space/bandwidth. Currently there are at least a dozen games that I had to remove from dosgames.com because there is nowhere on the web to download them. I can now host these games myself since I now have 500gigs :o of bandwidth a month.

3) Money. Lately, because the site has been using so much bandwidth I've been having to pay around $80 each month just to host it. The server costs $100/month including the 500gigs of bandwidth (I currently get 40gigs per month!) so I figure it's worth it.

"What effect will this have on the board?" you are probably asking.
"Will I lose my post count?"
"Will I have to murder emmzee in his sleep like the damn dirty scoundrel that he is?!?!?!?!?!!!!!!"

The answers are "hopefully not much", "hopefully not", and "please don't". :blah:

I'll be trying out a test with vgstores.com ... ie, I'll try moving the data for the phpBB install on that site first. If that works, I'll try to move this board. Hopefully all will go according to plan. *prays* If not, well ... Look at it this way, if it works I'll let you store your user icons on the server. :P

I'll post updates as I try stuff ... ttyl all :)

Oh and ... happy new year!!! :bday: :bday: :bday:

:bday: You can host your own games! So does that mean that if somebody here makes a game in DOS format you could host it? If so, yipee! Also, are all the games going to be hosted, or just the ones that you can't find elsewhere? So many changes.....

Oh, and I voted for "I like Skittles" because that's the name of one of my cats. She's called Skittles because she has one bright blue eye and one bright green eye.

At first I'll host only the games that aren't available elsewhere (or games you guys make as long as they're not really huge or anything) and see how much bandwidth that uses, then I'll probably add more that are on slow servers or unreliable ftp sites or whatever.

You'd be just as likely to loose your post count by switching to rackspace as you would switching to this one.

Okay, so the transfer of the vgstores.com phpbb went okay. You can see it in all its glory at:

<A HREF="http://www.vgstores.com/forum/">http:// ... /forum/</A>

Other than the userlevel icons (which I haven't reinstalled yet) everything seems to work.

The problem could be that, while the vgstores.com board had only about two dozen posts, this board has several thousand. I think its quite possible to be done but it may take some time. (ie I'll probably have to break up the backup file into like 20 different parts and upload them seperately.)

All this to say, that at some point later today I'll be shutting down the board so that the move can take place. The reason I'll be shutting down the board is:

- I need to switch the dosgames.com domain to the new server before I can setup phpbb there
- I need to backup the message board and all the posts before the domain switch happens
- Therefore, I have to backup the database, then switch the domain name, then reinstall and restore the database ... thus, I have to shut down the board in the meantime so that there are no lost posts

Probably this will happen later today ... keep your fingers crossed heh :)
