I've had it with this downtime

Post by emmzee »

Okay as anyone who's been coming to the site has noticed, the site has been down a lot lately. Unfortunately I've been unable to resolve the problem with my current host; it may or may not be their fault. Regardless, I'll be switching hosts soon to fully managed hosting to hopefully alleviate this problem. Thank you for your patience in the meantime!

Luckily I can log in again, had a bad case of cold turkey today, mister !!!

Let's hope that a host_switch will solve most problems.

Good. It was getting a tad bit annoying. :) Not that I'm going anywhere, but what's soon? A week, a month, a year?

Hopefully I'll buy the new server and start moving stuff over within a week ... I won't start with DOSGames.com though, I'll move over a few lesser sites first to test things out, then I'll move DOSGames. So an extremely rough estimate is two weeks before it's all moved and setup and such.

Ok, people I'm taking bets* as to how long the new server will last until the evil influence of DOS games[and gamers] will burn trough it's cooling system!

The new server has been ordered! It's more expensive than the current one but it'll be managed (that is, the new host will take care of patches, updates, maintenance & security), has better specs, and the new host supposedly has amazing tech support.

Specs:
» Processor: Intel E4500 DUAL CORE
» Memory: 2GB DDR SDRAM
» Hd1: 120GB 7200RPM SATA / 8MB Cache
» Hd2: 120GB 7200RPM SATA / 8MB Cache
» RemoteBackup: 50GB Remote Backup (+Offsite Backup)
» OS: Linux - CentOS 4
» ControlPanel: CPanel / Web Host Manager (+ServerSecure) (+Fantastico/XController)

Oh also, 3200gb of monthly bandwidth, over double the current amount ... of course, the sites don't use anywhere CLOSE to that but it's nice to know it's there :D

Should start moving stuff over tomorrow. :no1:

:D

Don't forget to use plenty foam to protect the files whilst moving them.
:lolcat:

*Edit
BTW, any reason for using CentOS 4? Latest stabile release is CentOS 5.0 (AFAIK- no real experience with CentOS).
Just a thought ....

*Edit²
Now at least, no äïöü posts to delete when site is down ....
:suspicious:

CentOS 4 is what's offered so that's what I'll use. The only other option was Windows. :)

Fair enough, no other serious option besides CentOS 4.
Pretty good OS for server duty, I heard.
(As said before: no personal experience with it).

Oh, and I am also taking bets as to how long it will take emmzee to trip, fall, and accidentally delete the forum database, the backups of the database, and [IF the site had one] the game database?

And that he won't be maimed for life after the fall!

Same fees apply

But 240 gigs HDD? How much do your sites[and whatever's on the server] take, anyway?

I seriously don't need even close to 240gb ... DOSGames.com takes less 2gb I think and most of what is there is server stats files, logs, etc. But that was the smallest/cheapest option for the HD so ... *shrugs*

As for the forum DB, I backed it up today, so at worst (if the current server decided to die entirely) the forum would be reverting to a slightly older version.

Yep, welcome to the modern times.
Last weekend I went to the computer shop, I need an extra SATA HD for sysbackup purposes, even 80 Gb would be an overkill.
Smallest available: 120Gb.
Now yeah, will use one of my 80Gb as backupHD and mount that new 120Gb as extra for daily use.

Pfffrt, soon we will be on Tb.

They were selling these 1TB HDDs at like, $110, last time(er... last Tuesday?) I checked!

Oh, and I'm willing to lower it to 53.5 if that makes you place a bet! :D
