These hints aren't helping. lol. Well, I thought the idea was to try the less obvious things first, then move to the more obvious. :) Point taken. So let's try the next hint. Hint 3: In this game there is a plot twist, wherein upon defeating the final enemy, it is revealed that he was not in fact t...

Moon Patrol --> Nope Street Rod --> Nope (although in principle - it is a possible answer, as far as I know!) It's been a few days, so another clue is necessary. :) Hint 2: In the DOS version of the game, in low memory situations, some characters will be replaced with other characters, to reduce the...

Wolf3D --> Nope

It can only play sound effects, not music, through the PC speaker.

Plus, you are also right that it's not a port, per se, because it was originally developed for DOS (even though it was not developed under DOS, but rather on NeXT machines).

Captain Blood --> Nope

From a quick check, the DOS version does seem to have some PC speaker music (e.g. title screen), but not during most of the gameplay. In any case, it's not the game I had in mind. :)

OK. Well, this one won't be too difficult, I hope. :D

Hint 1: The DOS port of this game supported the full soundtrack (music, not just sound effects) being played through the PC speaker.

I think there's one thing though - whenever I tried mounting an ISO which was located inside a directory already mounted in DOSBox, it would refuse to mount. E.g. if I had C:\DOS mounted as the C:\ drive in DOSBox, and the path to ISO was C:\DOS\ISOFILE.ISO, then IMGMOUNT would return some kind of ...

Could be Shadow Knights, although the graphics are not so dark (for the most part).

Intermittent problems such as what you describe are most often a motherboard issue. In your case, related to the hard drive controller. Could be a tired or blown capacitor as Quadko mentioned. If there is visible damage / degradation in one of the capacitors on the board - then replacing it with a n...

Just to reiterate - if you still own the original disks, they run wonderfully under latest DOSBox. You can MOUNT the actual CD, or rip it and use IMGMOUNT. Even CD Audio works.

You are absolutely right, I stand corrected. :) ASCII refers only to the lower 128 characters, which excludes most of the extended set used to make these graphics.

Very nice!

I made similar batch files to run all such multi-episode games on my DOS machine, but I never took the time to create (nor could I, probably, even if I wanted) such fine ASCII art.

Yes, they really did change the code. I wouldn't call it "polishing", though. ;)

And yes, it is running in Dosbox, and I can make such modifications just to get it to work the way I want, but why would I bother, when I can just play the old version? :)

I don't like the new version of Blackthorne. IMO, the original release is better. They aimed to make it more friendly for PC players, but I think they missed the point by a few miles and screwed it up royally. 1) Password system replaced with automatically saved progress - so OK, I don't need to rem...

Well, I haven't posted on these forums for over 5 years. :) And what is a better way to come back than to resurrect a 5+ year thread with some new relevant information. :D Apparently, one clever person reverse-engineered the DOS version of Golden Axe, found the bug that leads to the "Insert Dis...
