C&C Gold Resolution issues

Hi. I'm playing C&C Gold on a Win98 comp. Is there any way to change the resolution because by default everything looks so small that it makes the game very hard to play. Theres a program that lets you change the res, but there only two options (640x480 640x400). also, both of those resolutions give me errors. one stretches the screen so much that i can't see the top interface and the other one makes the game look like a widescreen movie.

I don't know specifically about C&C Gold, but that certainly was the era before resolution changes were standard. And as I recall, that's not a 3d game, and it was mostly 3d games that allowed for control over resolution.

Best recommendation I have is "bigger monitor", but even if an option that may have its own problems. Best of luck! :)

Update video drivers? Low end vidcard?

Is C&C updated with latest patches ? v1.06c from Nyerguds?
Even if it's an unofficial patch it's a good one.

etcetera .... Without any relevant details about your hardware hard to tell ......."Win98 comp" is all the info we get from you. And my witchbulb blew a fuse last week, so that won't help neither.

Heh, heh, heh.

Patches and unofficial patches, very good point. C&C has/had a devoted following.

Aright, so basically the Win95 gold version takes the resolution up from the 320x240 of the dos version. there's a program that lets you change it (included with the gold versino) but, yeah, only two choices 640x480 640x400. and the monitor is 17 inches. i tried an unofficial patch (Nyerguds) but it doesn't install in win98. i'll keep looking maybe there's a fix. units are very small, so small as to make the game hard to play (and btw, c&c doesn't have any functions that lets you select multiple units, except for dragging a box) http://www.abandongames.com/inc/images.php?photoID=58

Not really 'low end', (but far from the higher ones ,to name only one: VooDoo3 ....) but should be able to handle C&C without problems.
Had good results myself in the past applying Neyerguds's patch, wonder why it didn't worked yours, but I've never cared enough to dig into the tech side of that game, in other words: have no idea.

17" mon should do, but your remark:

Makes me wonder: what happens when you set desktop res to 640x480? Game should fill up screen nicely in W98/640x480 if W98's desktop looks ok in that res.

On the other hand, the C&C dos version can look pretty swell in dosbox, ref:

There are also a lot of C&C topics on Vogon, google vogon command & conquer and you will get some results.
Dunno if you're registred on Vogon, if yes you could ask over there, a lot of tech specialists in those matters on Vogon ....

Stretching is a common problem with old 4:3 aspect games on todays 16:9 or 16:10 displays.
If the game is playable in a scaleable window it might look better.

C&C was originally DOS, not sure if the GOLD version had a plain DOS installation as an option as well, in which case DOSbox might help making a scaleable window that wouldn't stretch, if the Win9x version does not have that option.
