I made Theme Hospital work with Dosbox, it's fine and all, except there is a problem with the sound - there's no sound output at all. I have checked the in-game settings and the sound settings are all set to enabled.

Does anyone know of a fix for this problem?

I use Windows XP, Soundcard: Realtek AC'97 Audio

You shouldn't need to use DOSBox to run Theme Hospital as it's not a DOS game.

Yes it's a dosgame, and yes it's W95 game. First it was a dosgame, then they adapted the EXE to run in W95.

If you want to run it in Xp rightclick on HOSP95.EXE and set compability to W95, that's all. Start the game with HOSP95.EXE, runs fine on XP.

But the game runs also in plain dos or dosbox, then you startup with HOSPITAL.EXE.
Also you FIRST have to run SETSOUND in dos or through dosbox, chooseCreative Labs Soundblaster or 100% compatible for midi and digital, let the setsound program detect the settings for both automatically, hit done and you should have full sound in dosbox.

Okay. I've just donwloade the old Theme hospital (aaah brings back memories Shit-Eating Grin)
And i did as peopel said in here.
I do not have a file called HOSP95.EXE
I have a file called HOSPITAL.EXE, so i sat it to run on W95, but theres just no sound what so ever.
So what is wrong with the sound? and yes, i am using XP.

Running the dosversion directly in XP ===>> if you don't have a full SB compatible soundcard (Most XP computers don't) ===>> no sounds.
But:
[echo modus]

[/echo modus]
To conclude:
Dosversion+XP = DOSBOX.

sorry to intrude and butt in with my own problem but couldn't resist replying to this (ive been searching for the solution for way too long now!):

If you want to run it in Xp rightclick on HOSP95.EXE and set compability to W95, that's all. Start the game with HOSP95.EXE, runs fine on XP.

that is fine, it runs and ive got halfway through the game but now it freezes and crashes unexpectedly. (i am running the game from disc)

But the game runs also in plain dos or dosbox, then you startup with HOSPITAL.EXE.

but i get this error line: "cannot run hospital.exe in dos"
i have tried fiddling with all the property compatibility settings and even copying the config.nt and autoexec.nt files into the folder (did this for battle isle2 to get it to work) but no avail. is there a solution to this or am i going to need to try running win 95 in dosbox?! (i am not tech head enough for that!)
thanks

copy the entire disc to the computer and try again with a no CD patch, that worked for me.

To run it in dosbox:
If on XP:
http://www.dosgames.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5443
If on Vista:
http://www.dosgames.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10437

Or to run dosbox from a USB key:
http://www.dosgames.com/forum/about11743.html

Please forget the autoexec.nt or config.nt or W95 to run the game in dosbox, dosbox doesn't need that.

I have the original dos version of the game (not the one that was updated for win 95). I'm able to run it BOTH using DOSBox and just in normal XP. However, I can ONLY get it to run if both the MIDI and FX options are disabled in SETSOUND.

I've experimented with just about all the settings using DOSBox and with just XP. The results are the same, regardless of if I'm using the emulator or not. I CAN get it to run with just MIDI turned on (either with SB or General MIDI), but it makes the game incredibly slow, choppy, and almost unplayable (both in DOSBox, and XP). Attempting to turn on ANY of the FX settings simply crash the game entirely.

MIDI music: Creative Labs Sound Blaster or 100% compatible
Digital audio: None

results: runs, but choppy

MIDI music: None
Digital audio: None

results: runs perfect

MIDI music: (either of the above or "general")
Digital audio: ANY

results: game crashes at startup.

Any advice? I REALLY want sound! It's just not Theme Hospital without the nagging secretary! *cries*

Weird, runs fine in dosbox here.
What are your mount lines?
How did you install the game?
Dosbox version?
.....details ?

I can get the game working fine by just clicking on 'Hospital' after downloading, but like the creator of the thread have no sound.

I assume I dont need to run it through Dosbot as I can get the game working fine, there's just no sound. Pretty stumped and would love some help!

You assume wrongly.
You won't get sound when running directly under XP, use dosbox, read the stickies.

If you absolutely don't want to use dosbox (........ can be a matter of religious restrictions ..... *sigh*) try with VDMSound.

I still don't understand why people don't use the Windows Version rather.
